SafeWork NSW is continuing to crack down on irresponsible pyro-technicians and illegal firework displays and are planning a blitz on licensed and single-use firework licence holders ahead of the Queen's Birthday long weekend.
SafeWork NSW Executive Director Specialist Services, Andrew Gavrielatos said the regulator had suspended or cancelled the licences of four fireworks operators in the last 18 months where the investigations determined their displays were not safe or were not fit and proper persons to hold a licence.
"In the last 12 months, SafeWork inspectors have carried out 126 verification activities of firework events across metropolitan and regional New South Wales," Mr Gavrielatos said.
"Our inspectors have issued multiple infringement notices for offences including possessing fireworks without a licence, transporting fireworks without a licence and non-notification of displays."
SafeWork NSW is also reminding NSW residents to celebrate the long weekend safely and not risk injury to themselves, their family and friends by using illegal backyard fireworks.
"Although fun, fireworks are not a toy. They are regulated under explosives laws because they can cause serious injuries such as burns and even death," Mr Gavrielatos said.
"Fireworks should only be set off by trained and licensed individuals who know how to manage the risks and ensure everyone's safety.
"Using fireworks without a licence risks an on-the-spot fine of up to $2000, with penalties ranging up to $27,500 for displaying fireworks without a licence. Selling or purchasing fireworks without a licence can also result in fines of $27,000 and 12-months jail," Mr Gavrielatos said.
