First Day Back for Tasmanian Government Schools

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Education and Training

The start of a new school year is a very exciting time for students, parents, teachers and Principals with so much anticipation for what the 2020 year will bring.

Today, we welcome back more than 62 000 state school students returning to 195 Government schools across Tasmania.

I sincerely hope this year is filled with opportunities for each and every Tasmanian student to learn, grow and achieve their full potential.

The Government also welcomes back all of our dedicated teachers, principals, leaders and school staff.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is committed to lifting education achievements in each of our schools. We have made record investment in education of $7.1 billion Including employing an additional 221 full time teachers in schools and over 64 professional support staff.

2020 is a significant year for education in Tasmania with the implementation of our nation-leading disability funding model that will ensure an additional 2000 students receive funding to support their learning outcomes.

This year more families and young children will benefit from Our Working Together for 3 Year Olds program that provides free quality early learning for children who need it most. Our ever popular Launching into Learning and Learning in Families Together programs will continue to support children and families to learn together.

Our extension of 47 Tasmanian high schools is already having a positive impact on attainment and retention, and we hope to continue this momentum in 2020.

We recognise that a great education is a passport to a better life and we will continue to invest heavily in education to support all students.
