First-hand insight into Tasmania's hospitals

Sarah Courtney,Minister for Health

In my first few days as Minister for Health I have twice visited the Launceston General Hospital and spent many hours at the Royal Hobart Hospital, meeting with staff and patients to listen and understand first-hand the challenges our hospitals face in meeting growing demand.

It is clear to me that we must work closely together as we implement our plan for a better health system and continue to invest strongly in health.

In the coming days I will spend more time at the LGH and visit the North West Regional Hospital and the Mersey Community Hospital, as well as other district hospitals and health hubs across the state, to ensure I have a full and frank understanding of the challenges the system is currently facing.

There is no doubt our plan to build a better health system across Tasmania is critical, with unprecedented increased demand. But having met with hospital staff and patients, I have also received some really positive feedback about the level of care received and some exciting programs and initiatives that will deliver real benefits in the future.

As part of our ongoing strong investment in health, we are rolling out the $87 million LGH redevelopment, including Ward 4K, as well as embracing the opportunities presented by the Masterplanning process to deliver a clear and up to date blueprint for the future of our hospital.

Our incredibly hardworking staff are doing an amazing job in very busy conditions and we will continue to do everything we can to support them.

I'm looking forward to bringing a fresh set of eyes to this portfolio, and working with the new Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing Jeremy Rockliff to ensure every aspect of health, including primary and prevention, community and acute, is performing at its very best.

I have a big job ahead of me and I look forward to continuing to meet and work with staff, the Tasmanian community and health stakeholders to face this challenge head on and deliver innovative and sustainable solutions.
