Fish Smart, Buy Local: Support NT Seafood This Easter

NT Government

With the Easter long weekend kicking off tomorrow, Territorians are being reminded to fish responsibly and support the NT's world-class seafood industry by buying local this Good Friday.

Fisheries compliance officers will be out on the water across the Top End, conducting patrols and inspections.

The Fisheries Compliance Unit works closely with the Aboriginal Marine Rangers, the Australian Fisheries Management Authority, and other Territory agencies, to ensure recreational and commercial fishers are doing the right thing.

The compliance unit plays a vital role in ensuring fishos stick to the rules when it comes to possession limits and fisheries legislation, to protect the sustainability of our rivers and coastal waters.

Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Gerard Maley said a strong compliance presence helped protect the Territory lifestyle and ensured the NT remained one of the best places in the world to fish.

"We all love getting out on the water over Easter, but it's important that everyone plays by the rules to protect our fisheries for the future," said Mr Maley.

"Protecting the Territory's rivers and coastline, and restoring our world class lifestyle, are key priorities for our government and that means making sure fishing rules are followed to keep our waterways healthy and sustainable."

Fishos are reminded to check for area-specific regulations including those within the Daly and Mary River Fish Management Zones, Kakadu National Park, and waters over Aboriginal land.

Recently, night patrols have occurred in popular fishing spots including the Mary River, the Shady Camp barrage and together with the Malak Malak Rangers along the Daly River, in response to reports of the illegal use of live bait, cast nets and exceeding possession limits.

Suspected illegal fishing activity can be reported to the 24-hour FISHWATCH hotline on 1800 891 136.

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is also encouraging Territorians to support the Territory's seafood industry and local jobs, by buying fresh local seafood this Easter.

"Our seafood industry is worth over $136 million and supports more than 940 full-time jobs across the Territory," said Mr Maley.

"This Easter, I encourage everyone to buy local and support the hardworking Territorians behind our world-class industry as our government makes 2025 a year of action, certainty and security."

Mr Barra Director Niall Atkinson said: "Mr Barra is proud to offer quality seafood and support our local fishermen, restaurants, hotels and more. With 40 years in business, I encourage locals to pop in and stock up on seafood this Easter."

NT Seafood Council CEO Daniel Capps said: "For those unable to get out on the water, we're truly spoilt for choice, with an abundance of fresh, high-quality produce thanks to the dedication and hard work of our local fishers and seafood retailers."

"The Northern Territory is home to some of the most sustainable and well-managed wild-caught fisheries and a growing aquaculture sector," said Mr Capps.

Together, they produce high-quality seafood sourced from our clean, pristine waters.

"This Easter, whether you're cooking at home or dining out, choose NT seafood and support our local fishers, producers, retailers and hospitality sector," he added.
