The world is opening up – and innovators and leaders in fishing and aquaculture are encouraged to make the most of it by applying for a prestigious Nuffield Scholarship to develop their knowledge and skills, travel and join a global network.
Applications are now open for a Fisheries and Aquaculture Scholarship, sponsored by Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) as part of the Nuffield Australia scheme. It is open to members of the commercial fishing and aquaculture, Indigenous fishing and recreational fishing sectors who are aged between 28 and 45.
The scholarship is valued at $30,000 and enables the recipient to study a topic important to their industry, including 14 weeks of group and individual travel over two years.
FRDC Managing Director Dr Patrick Hone says the scholarship is a unique opportunity to explore the world, discover new practices and ideas and forge life-long connections.
'The long-term capability and capacity of Australia's fishing and aquaculture sectors to lead and compete internationally and operate sustainably will be determined by our ability to navigate changing circumstances and adopt new technologies and production practices', he says.
'Nuffield Scholarships enable participants to do just that, by exposing them to new ideas and perspectives, developing their leadership skills and forming invaluable networks.'
He says support for a Nuffield Scholarship is part of FRDC's integrated leadership development program, which includes the Australian Rural Leadership Program and the National Seafood Industry Leadership Program.
Nuffield scholars meet international scholars at the Contemporary Scholars Conference and join a network of people at the cutting edge of primary industries.
Scholars participate in a six-week group study tour to New Zealand, China, the Americas and Europe to investigate issues related to primary production and experience local cultures. They also undertake an eight-week individual study tour and will be trained in communication skills and personal and professional development. Each scholar writes a report and shares the knowledge and experience they have gained with their industry.
There are 495 Nuffield scholars in Australia and 1,800 worldwide. The scheme is designed to support lifelong learning, offering ongoing communication with alumni, events, workshops and the chance to be involved in additional learning opportunities.
