Wagga Wagga City Council is joining communities across NSW and the world in shining a light on the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, from Tuesday 25 November to Tuesday 10 December 2025.
The trees in Fitzmaurice Street will be illuminated in purple and orange throughout the campaign period in recognition of the United Nations' UNiTE campaign to end violence against women and girls.
In Wagga Wagga the colour purple has long been associated with the 16 Days of Activism and the elimination of gender-based violence, having been selected many years ago by the Wagga Domestic Violence Liaison Committee (DVLC). The orange represents the NSW Government's campaign to unite communities in a collective call for change.
Every year from 25 November, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the international community comes together for 16 days to raise awareness and take action to end gender-based violence in all its forms.
Domestic, family and sexual violence is widespread, with devastating and long-term impacts on victim-survivors, their families, and the broader community. It is felt across NSW, and no community is free from it.
Violence against women is preventable. By lighting Fitzmaurice Street, Wagga Wagga will stand in solidarity with communities across the state and beyond to raise awareness and promote collective action to end gendered violence.
