The Fitzroy River Barrage reached 100% capacity at around 3.30am this morning, ensuring approximately two years' water supply.

Chair of Water Committee Councillor Neil Fisher said that this is a moment that is well worth celebrating.

"We are incredibly lucky in our Region to have such a reliable water supply," said Cr Fisher.

"In the 50 years since the Barrage has been operating it has refilled every year without fail.

"The way our river system works means that we can benefit from rainfall up to 500 kilometres away, and the Barrage can refill incredibly quickly.

"In just over a day we saw the Barrage fill from its lowest level in about a decade to 100% capacity.

"While this is fantastic news, the fact that the level of the Barrage did fall so low is also a reminder that we should not take our water supply for granted."

Fitzroy River Water Manager Dr Jason Plumb said it is always incredible seeing how quickly the Barrage can refill.

"In about 26 hours we saw the level of the Barrage rise almost 1.4 metres in height, filling from 69% capacity to 100%," said Dr Plumb.

"That's 15,000ML that was added to our storage in just over one day – which is certainly reason to celebrate!"
