Five teenagers will face court today charged over alleged property and traffic offences in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas this week.
Between Monday 27 May 2025 and Tuesday 28 May 2025, three vehicles were allegedly stolen during two break and enters in Kilaben Bay and Kotara South.
About 12.15pm yesterday (Tuesday 28 May 2025), Operation Soteria police were patrolling Elermore Vale when they sighted one of the vehicles.
As police conducted a U-turn to approach the vehicle, five teenagers approached the vehicle, with three entering the vehicle and two running from the scene.
As officers approached the vehicle, the driver allegedly rammed a police car before driving from the scene.
A pursuit was briefly initiated; however, police were unable to sight the vehicle.
As police approached the intersection of Jubilee Road and Watkins Street, officers saw the vehicle had collided with another vehicle before it crashed into a fence.
The occupants allegedly ran from the scene, failing to assist the other driver and passenger involved in the crash.
Police stopped and rendered assistance to the driver, a 39-year-old man, and his passenger, a four-year-old boy.
They were taken to John Hunter Hospital for assessment and have since been released.
With the assistance of the Dog Unit, three teenage boys – two aged 15 and a 14-year-old – were arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station.
Another two teens – a boy and girl aged 14 – were located nearby and arrested in relation to alleged breaches of bail.
The alleged driver, aged 15, was charged with nine offences:
- Aggravated break and enter dwelling etc in company steal (two counts),
- Aggravated break and enter commit serious indictable offence,
- Use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc,
- Police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly,
- Fail to stop and assist after impact cause injury,
- Not give particulars to other driver,
- Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, and
- Commit s 154A offence and disseminate.
The other 15-year-old boy was charged with eight offences:
- Aggravated break and enter dwelling etc in company steal,
- Aggravated break and enter commit serious indictable offence (two counts),
- Be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner (two counts),
- Commit s 154A offence and disseminate,
- Armed with intent to commit indictable offence, and
- Breach of bail.
The 14-year-old passenger was charged with seven offences:
- Aggravated break and enter dwelling etc in company steal (two counts),
- Break and enter house etc steal,
- Be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner,
- Drive conveyance taken without consent of owner,
- Commit s 154A offence and disseminate, and
- Breach of bail.
An outstanding warrant was also executed for eight charges relating to alleged assault, traffic, and bail breach offences.
The other 14-year-olds were each charged with breach of bail.
All five were refused bail to appear before a children's court today (Wednesday 28 May 2025).
