Five Teens Injured When Car Hits Tree - East Tamworth

Five teenagers have been injured – one critically – when a car hit a tree in East Tamworth overnight.

Emergency services were called to King George V Avenue about 8.40pm (Friday 10 July 2026), and found three girls and two boys had been injured.

Initial inquiries indicate the sedan they were travelling in left the road, with the rear right-passenger-side of the vehicle hitting a tree.

Two of the passengers have been flown to John Hunter Hospital; a 17-year-old girl, who was seated on the driver's-side back seat, suffered critical head injuries, while a 17-year-old boy, travelling in the left-side back seat, was thrown from the vehicle on impact and has suffered spinal injuries.

A 17-year-old girl, who is the alleged driver, suffered head and facial injuries. The girl, who is a P1 licence holder, has also undergone mandatory testing.

A third 17-year-old girl, believed to be the front-seat passenger, escaped with relatively minor injuries

A second 17-year-old boy, travelling in the middle rear-seat, is being assessed for leg and back injuries.

The last three remain in Tamworth Base Hospital, and police have been told their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

A crime scene has been established and specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) have been assisting local police.

Inquiries are continuing.
