Flickerfest Showcases Top Aussie Shorts in Griffith

Flickerfest 2026 promises an entertaining, inspiring and distinctly Australian celebration of storytelling on screen. Film lovers are encouraged to gather friends, raise a glass and experience the very best of Australian short filmmaking at Griffith Regional Theatre on Friday 6 March at 7:30pm.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2026, Flickerfest is Australia's most respected short film festival and an Academy® and BAFTA-qualifying event. This year's touring programme features eight outstanding Australian short films, handpicked from a record 3,700 entries. Showcasing award winners, audience favourites and exciting emerging voices, the collection highlights the creativity, diversity and strength of Australia's thriving short film industry.

Among this year's standout selections is Tuesday Tuesday, winner of Best Female Director at Flickerfest 2026, starring Peter Phelps (Stingers) in a powerful performance as a man confronting a fading world. Packed Away marks the directorial debut of Michala Banas (Always Greener, McLeod's Daughters), who stars alongside her father John in a deeply personal and intimate drama. Acclaimed actor Matt Day (Rake) writes and directs the dark comedy Baby Shower, featuring Hugo Weaving in a sharp and unexpected take on family ritual, while Writers in Love delivers a delightful romantic comedy exploring love, rivalry and creative ambition.

Audiences are invited to make an evening of it, with a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink and a slice of pizza available at interval. Adding to the atmosphere, elegant local ensemble "Velvet Sessions" will perform live before the screening and during intermission. Featuring piano, guitar, bass and violin, the group brings lush harmonies and sophisticated interpretations of pop and soft rock classics.
