A whirlwind of storytelling in bite-sized brilliance is coming to The Civic Theatre on Sunday, 2 August.
For 35 years, Flickerfest has been bringing 'The Cream of Short Films' - outstanding Australian and international short films - to our towns and cities, and 2026 is shaping up to be a great year.
From 12pm to 2pm, the Best of Australian Shorts promise a brilliant mix of comedy, drama and heartfelt storytelling from some of the country's most exciting filmmakers, featuring familiar faces including Hugo Weaving, Kat Stewart, Colin Lane, Peter Phelps and Michala Banas.
Enjoy some complementary between-show appetisers then find your seat again to be uplifted, inspired and moved by the next generation of the world's most talented filmmakers from 3pm to 5pm.
Gunnedah Shire Council's Manager Economy and Growth Susan Frater said it was exciting to once again host Australia's only Academy Qualifying and BAFTA Recognised Short Film Festival.
"Flickerfest is known for exceptional storytelling, innovative ideas and original voices, so if you've never experienced it, I encourage you to step into the realm of independent cinema at The Civic Theatre," she said.
Among the eight Australian Shorts is a film about a baby shower that erupts in chaos when the mother-to-be's estranged father turns up unannounced, an unwitting dog 'therapist' holding a fractured retiree couple together, and the tale of a young support worker coming to terms with farewelling a longtime client living with younger-onset dementia.
International Shorts will feature eight films including the story of downtrodden men connecting unexpectedly through an impromptu sing-off at a lowly pub, the surprising friendship between a teenage boy and a lonely widow when a rogue football lands in her garden, and the complexities an eight-year-old girl encounters when navigating a new world following the arrival of her baby brother.
