Floating Refuges To Help Protect ACT's Waterbirds

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Floating islands will soon provide safer resting and feeding sites for the ACT's native waterbirds.

We are investing $60,000 to help protect native waterbirds in the Territory from the possible arrival of H5 avian influenza (bird flu).

The funding will support the ACT Government deploy floating island refuges across reserves in the ACT. This includes waterbodies like:

  • lakes
  • dams
  • wetlands

These islands will give at-risk‑ waterbirds, such as the sharp‑tailed sandpiper and Latham's snipe, safe places to rest and feed. The aim is to reduce stress and keep birds away from threats like cats and foxes.

The Territory has many parks and wetlands that support a wide range of bird species, including some that are rare or threatened.

Healthy habitats help native species cope with disease. Strong populations will also improve their chances of withstanding the potential impacts of H5 bird flu. If this trial is successful, the floating islands could be used at more sites in the ACT and across Australia.

This project is part of a $100 million Australian Government investment to prepare for H5 bird flu. This includes $35.9 million in environment measures. Other projects underway in the ACT include:

  • $100,000 supporting local species and key site planning
  • $185,000 to improve biosecurity at Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary for the endangered eastern quoll.
