Flood-Hit Communities Enter Recovery Phase in NT

NT Government

The northern flooding event is entering the recovery phase, with the emergency declaration lifted this afternoon for Kalkarindji, Daguragu and Timber Creek.

The focus over the weekend for these communities will be restoring them to business-as-usual conditions.

An emergency declaration remains in place for Pigeon Hole and Yarralin, with teams focused on returning people to community and maintaining food security.

Critical goods

A delivery of food has been made to Timber Creek and Yarralin, and supplies in other affected communities have been replenished.

Food security has been a critical focus of the emergency response, and authorities have worked closely with suppliers, transport operators and store operators to ensure essential items are available.

Road access

The Victoria Highway between Katherine and Timber Creek will open at 8.00pm this evening with restrictions; this will result in critical goods delivered to the residents of Timber Creek.

The road from Timber Creek to the Western Australia border is likely to remain closed until early to mid-next week.

At this time, only those with a genuine need to travel to Timber Creek should do so.

Motorists are advised to remain alert for wandering stock and damage to roads as they reopen. Extreme caution should be exercised when driving at low light or night.

Repatriation of displaced persons

As essential services and infrastructure is restored in communities, including water quality testing in all affected communities confirming water is safe to drink. The repatriation of medically vulnerable people and evacuated residents commenced and is expected to continue in coming days.

Incident Controller Superintendent Daniel Shean:

"I would like to thank the community in affected areas for their patience as supplies and services have been replenished.

"The response to this event has been a coordinated effort across government departments, local councils and service providers, with our priority being the safety of Territorians.

"Our contractors are working hard to restore road access. We ask that road users follow all directions and abide by restrictions. This will ensure road repairs can be completed as quickly as possible."
