Focus on wildlife as safety signs erected at Bushland Beach

Drivers in Bushland Beach will now have reminders to slow down for wildlife thanks to new signs installed by Townsville City Council.

The signage has been installed along Coutts Dr and Mount Low Pkwy to alert drivers to the presence of wallabies and other wildlife in the area.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability chairperson Maurie Soars said it was important for motorists to be aware of wildlife.

"We're lucky in Townsville to have a vast array of beautiful animals living in our suburbs, but we also need to be vigilant and drive carefully in areas where wildlife is prevalent," Cr Soars said.

"Having signs in place can serve as a small reminder for motorists to slow down and take care for both their sake and for the sake of the animals who live in the area."

Local councillor Sue Blom said wallabies were particularly abundant in the area.

"Bushland Beach is aptly named, as it is where Townsville's bushland stretches right to the ocean, making it a prime place for wallabies to reside," Cr Blom said.

"These creatures are quick on their feet, which is why it's important to keep an eye out for them while driving through the suburb."

To report an injured, sick or orphaned animal, call the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625).
