FOGO Options for Apartment Waste Recycling

City of Port Phillip
Whether your building is on a Council waste service or not, there are ways to keep your food scraps out of landfill and help create nutrient-rich compost instead.

Shared FOGO for Council-serviced buildings

If your apartment block receives a Council waste service, you should have received access to a shared FOGO bin between 2023 and 2024. These green-lidded bins are designed for recycling:

  • food scraps
  • garden clippings
  • coffee grounds and more.

If you're in a large apartment complex, you may not know that your building has received FOGO. It's worth exploring your bin rooms to find out.

To make sorting easier at home, residents can collect a free kitchen caddy from any of our libraries. It's a simple way to separate organics before dropping them into the shared bin.

Not on a Council service? You still have options

If your building isn't covered by Council waste services, you can still recycle food waste:

  • Use one of the 76 communal FOGO hubs located across the City. Visit our website for a map of locations.
  • Talk to your Owners Corporation or Building Manager about accessing FOGO through a private contractor. Many buildings are eligible to set up their own service.

Why FOGO matters

Recycling food and garden waste helps reduce landfill, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and create compost that nourishes our parks and gardens. Whether you live in a high-rise or a small unit block, every banana peel counts.

Want to help your building use FOGO bins better?

We've got posters for download, bin stickers, corflutes and more - just reach out. Let's make apartment living more sustainable, one caddy at a time.
