February 5, 2019 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada
Canada's objective is to ensure that Daesh suffers an enduring defeat.
Today, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced she will participate in a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Global Coalition against Daesh, hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in Washington, D.C., on February 6, 2019.
At the meeting, the Minister and coalition partners will discuss the next phase of the international community's efforts to defeat Daesh.
In advance of the meeting, the Minister announced that Canada will provide over $13 million to prevent and counter terrorist threats and violent extremism, disrupt extremist propaganda, promote accountability for perpetrators of war crimes and enhance security and stability in the region.
"Canada is proud of its contribution to the Global Coalition against Daesh, including military assistance and support for stability in the region. As Daesh's territorial hold recedes, it is even more important for members of the coalition to meet and discuss how to ensure Daesh's defeat is total and enduring. We must also make certain that those responsible for its atrocities are held to account."
