The City of Kingston confirms that the 11-month trial sublease for Seasoul Sauna at the Mordialloc Sailing Cub on the foreshore has concluded.
As was agreed from the outset, the operation was established as a temporary trial only, to help determine whether commercial ventures could be appropriate in this sensitive foreshore area.
During the trial, Council received both positive feedback and community complaints. Given the foreshore's environmental significance and public purpose, no guarantees were ever made that the operation would continue beyond the trial period.
Any future commercial use of Kingston's foreshore requires careful assessment in partnership with the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action to ensure the protection of our fragile coastal environment, public safety, residential amenity and equitable access to the beach.
This process will take time and if it is eventually agreed that commercial use could be considered in certain places, it would involve a fair and transparent application process open to all interested parties.
Council has offered support to Seasoul Sauna and has actively worked with the operator to explore alternative sites off the foreshore that could support the continuation of the business.
Council recognises the community interest in this matter and remains committed to balancing health and wellbeing opportunities with the long-term protection of our natural environment for everyone to enjoy.
