The removal of waste bins from our beaches has proven a big success over the summer months.
With the bins relocated to the foreshore carparks, road reserves, pathways, and beach access points, they are much more accessible by the trucks and able to be emptied far more regularly, including during busy summer days.
The truck collections were complemented by manual litter collections, sand raking and promenade sweeping, and temporary skips being placed at key locations.
Bin collections increased by 30% in comparison to last summer and reports of overflowing bins dropping by 70%. On some busy days four truckloads of compacted waste were collected from the foreshore bins, which just wasn't possible previously.
Mayor Georgina Oxley said our beaches are proving more popular every year and it's great to hear the positive results.
"As with most major changes we did experience some teething problems as the new system was implemented, but we were able to make some adjustments based on the experiences of our community," Cr Oxley said.
"The service is now agile and responsive to increased beach use, hot weather forecasts, and further supported by the collection of data, including through bin sensors, QR code reporting and customer feedback.
"We are dedicated to caring for our awesome coastline and we now have a more efficient and effective service that has improved the experience for our beachgoers, reduced litter and the associated odours and environmental concerns, and improved safety.
"A big thanks to locals and visitors alike who have responded positively to the change and taken personal responsibility for their waste when visiting our beaches."
Our recent community Summer Survey received 830 responses, with Mordialloc identified as the most visited beach and 97% of respondents planning to visit our Kingston beaches again.
We are always looking for ways to keep improving our service. To find out more visit kingston.vic.gov.au/foreshore-bins
