Former priest charged with historical child sex offences in Newcastle

A former Anglican priest will appear in court next year, after being charged with alleged sexual assaults upon two boys in the Hunter region during the 1970s, NSW Police say.

In 2013, officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command established Strike Force Arinya 2 to review allegations that between 1971 and 1975, a man assaulted two boys in various locations including Edgeworth, Minmi, West Wallsend, Gateshead and Belmont.

Following inquiries, a 79-year-old man, from Ballarat, has been issued with a Future Count Attendance Notice (FCAN) to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 2 February 2017 on 24 charges, including assault with intent to commit buggery, personating husband, six counts of buggery, and 16 counts of indecent assault on male.
