Extreme fires, floods and storms are increasing in Tasmania and we need reform within our emergency services to keep Tasmanians safe.
This includes a stronger, clearer chain of command and a fair, sustainable and ring-fenced funding model.
The risks to property and life are increasing which is why the Rockliff Liberal Government is acting on the findings of multiple independent reviews to establish a better model to support our first responders and save lives.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said that in addition to extending consultation on the Government's TFES Bill until December 1, a Roundtable forum will be held next week.
"The tragic bushfires burning currently on the mainland have already taken lives and destroyed homes and businesses. Tasmania too will face a hot, dry bushfire season ahead," Minister Ellis said.
"Across our community, there is widespread support for securing our fire and emergency services for a challenging future. Agreeing on the right model is critical.
"This Roundable will bring together industry, business, unions and community leaders to discuss in-depth all aspects of the proposed reforms focus on potential solutions and find common ground.
"I have written to stakeholders proposing the Roundtable is held next week. Already I am receiving strong, positive responses. Our key stakeholders are keen to get together and work with our Government as we all know reform is needed - the question is not if, but how.
"Many reviews have found that Tasmania needs to act now to secure our fire and emergency services for the challenges of the future and I've heard consistently that this reform is needed, while ensuring we deliver the right model.
"We want the final model to be fair to households, fair to businesses, fair to our regions, and importantly – fair to our emergency services so they can save lives.
"We also know that finalising the best model will take time, consultation and consideration and we believe this Roundtable will help us achieve the best possible outcome for all Tasmanians.
"I also encourage any Tasmanian with a view on this issue to get involved with the consultation process and share your ideas, because this is about the future of our great State and the safety of our children and grand-children," Minister Ellis said.
