Police have charged four people and seized two knives during a high-visibility operation in Sydney's south yesterday.
Operation Ares is a high-visibility operation in which officers use handheld scanners – electronic metal-detecting 'wands' – as a disruption and preventative strategy to reduce knife crime and boost community safety.
Between 7am and 5pm yesterday (Wednesday 3 September 2025) South Sydney Proactive Crime Team, with the assistance of Police Transport Command Central and Central Metropolitan Region High Visibility Patrol, conducted the operation at Redfern Railway Station, Waterloo Metro and nearby streets.
During the operation, 553 scans were conducted, resulting in two knives being seized.
There were also four drug detections, 15 Apprehended Domestic Violence Order checks, two Firearm Prohibition Order searches, four bail compliance checks, and four arrests:
- A 57-year-old man was issued a court attendance notice for drug possession and custody of a knife.
- A 53-year-old man was issued a court attendance notice for drug possession.
- A 43-year-old woman was issued a court attendance notice for drug possession.
- A 34-year-old man was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
Operation Ares will continue to run in various areas across NSW.
