Four people have been arrested as part of a Tweed/Byron Police District operation targeting repeat property offenders.
Earlier this month, Tweed/Byron PD, with assistance from Gold Coast Police, commenced Operation Marauder to target repeat property offenders throughout Far Northern NSW and South-East Queensland.
Yesterday (Wednesday 5 February 2020), Tweed/Byron officers and QLD PolAir located a blue Toyota Corolla believed to be stolen from a Queensland address.
Following inquiries, officers attended Leisure Drive, Banora Point, and spoke with two boys, aged 13 and 14.
During a search, police allegedly located a car key to the car.
Following further inquiries, police attended a home on Dundee Drive, Banora Point, and located a silver Lexus, also believed to be stolen.
The two boys were arrested and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station, where they were charged with two counts of receive property stolen outside NSW greater than $15,000, and one count of possess implements to enter/drive conveyance. Both teens were refused bail to face a children's court today (Thursday 6 February 2020).
Then about 4.45pm yesterday (Wednesday 5 February 2020), Tweed/Byron officers were patrolling Tweed Heads South when they stopped and spoke with a group of males.
A 19-year-old man allegedly attempted to flee from police when a short foot pursuit ensued.
The man continued to resist arrest before being restrained; during the arrest, a senior officer received minor injuries.
Police also spoke to a 21-year-old man at the scene. During a subsequent person search, police allegedly located a set of knuckle dusters.
Both men were arrested and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.
The 19-year-old was charged with an outstanding warrant, two counts of goods in custody, two counts of resist officer, and one count each of assault officer, possess prohibited drug and be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.
The 21-year-old was charged with assault police and possess prohibited weapon.
Both men were refused bail to face Tweed Heads Local Court today (Thursday 6 February 2020).
Commander of Tweed/Byron Police District, Acting Superintendent Brendon Cullen, said police will continue to proactively target those repeat offenders within the district.
"Stolen motor vehicles have seen a spike in the Tweed/Byron area in recent weeks. We are determined to disrupt those people who enter our community and steal motor vehicles.
"Tweed/Byron Police, with the assistance of our cross-border neighbours at the Gold Coast, will be actively pursuing and targeting offenders who continue to commit crimes in NSW and QLD," A/Supt Cullen said.
Inquiries with Operation Marauder are ongoing.
