Free dementia education for family carers in North Queensland

Are you caring for a loved one who is living with dementia? Dementia Australia is holding free family carer education courses for residents living in Ayr and Ingham.

In 2018, there are estimated to be more than 80,000 people living with dementia in Queensland. Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people in Queensland living with dementia is expected to increase to an estimated 105,170 people by 2025 and 233,298 people by 2056. It is a condition that touches many.

The aim of Dementia Australia’s education sessions are to provide support for Queensland residents living with dementia, as well as provide support and education to their families and carers who are also impacted.

Dementia Australia’s Family Carer Course provides information on maintaining a healthy and respectful relationship through effective communication and understanding between a person living with dementia and their care giver.

Courses also provide carers with an opportunity to meet with others who are sharing a similar experience, allowing time to socialise and share important links to local support services that support carer well-being.

Topics include:

The nature of dementia

The impact of dementia on the person and their carer

Effective communication activities

Activities for living and pleasure

Understand and respond to behaviours of concern

Education is delivered in a friendly, safe and supportive environment by trained Dementia Australia staff.
