Free digital literacy classes keeping our community connected
Kingston Council is helping older residents and multicultural communities keep up with technology to stay connected in the modern online world.
Free workshops are on offer in March at Kingston Libraries to help beginners find their feet online.
Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said the COVID-19 pandemic had forced a large amount of community interaction online, leaving some people isolated due to a lack of confidence with digital technology.
"While it has been great to be able to meet together again in person, we know that digital connections are a growing part of our modern world," Cr Staikos said.
"We want to give everyone the confidence and skills to join online events and activities whether it's video calling friends and family, joining an online book club, listening to music or accessing government services."
The free workshops will offer small group and one-on-one services. Come along to learn the absolute basics including getting started, cyber safety and how to:
- Take photographs using an iPad or device
- Join social media pages such as Facebook
- Connect with friends and families (video calling, Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp)
- Check in with a QR Code for COVID safety
- Learn about Data (how to choose a data plan, home data vs mobile data, WiFI)
- Use important government/health sites.
The workshops will be held at Dingley Village Library and Chelsea Library.
The free program is aimed at seniors and people from a multicultural background who are not confident in the digital world but who are enthusiastic to learn. Beginners welcome and iPads are available to borrow if you don't have your own device.
