Did you know that some types of fruit tree netting are illegal in Victoria due to the dangers they pose to our native wildlife?
You can now swap your unsafe fruit tree netting for safe wildlife-friendly alternatives as part of a new Net Swap program.
Netting can be exchanged free of charge at Monash Recycling and Waste Centre.
Choose from new netting (2.8m x 2.8m) or 10 fruit protection bags.
Net Swap helps protect native wildlife, including birds, possums and flying foxes, from becoming trapped or injured in illegal fruit tree netting.
Is my netting unsafe?
Under Victorian regulations, netting used to protect household fruit trees and vegetable gardens must have a mesh size no greater than 5mm x 5mm at full stretch.
Netting with larger holes is unsafe for wildlife and illegal to use - if you can pass a finger through the netting, it's not safe.
Surrendered netting will be recycled, helping to reduce waste while supporting local wildlife.
The initiative is delivered in partnership with RSPCA Victoria, Zoos Victoria, Wildlife Victoria and Animal Welfare Victoria.
