Eurobodalla's pensioners and veterans are being urged to take advantage of the NSW Solar for Low Income Households program.
Eurobodalla Council's sustainability officer Aaron Atteridge said more than 115 home solar systems had already been installed across the far south coast under the program, "helping our community achieve lower emissions and lower energy bills".
"The shire's pensioner and veteran home owners can swap out the low income household rebate on their electricity bills for a new solar system," Mr Atteridge said.
The 3 kilowatt systems cut household electricity bills by up to $600 each year. The infrastructure and installation is free but requires eligible homeowners not claim the low income electricity bill rebate for ten years. The yearly rebate is $285, so the solar install could save low-income homeowners additional money.
Mr Atteridge said eligible customers could also choose to upsize their new solar system, to a maximum of 6 kilowatts.
"The program would cover the costs for the initial 3 kilowatts, then the homeowner would pay for all costs associated with any extra capacity," he said.
"When it comes to accessing clean power, the initial purchase and installation costs can be a huge barrier. This Solar for Low Income Households program is a look-in for people who may otherwise lack the resources to invest."
