Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour Penholder Opens

  • Penholder facility at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour complete
  • $2.9 million State Government investment delivers new public facilities
  • Key milestone in work to improve and better connect southern part of the harbour
  • Cook Government committed to delivering quality infrastructure for Western Australians

The future vision for Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is a step closer with the completion of a new $2.9 million penholder facility in the southern part of the harbour.

The new dedicated penholder facility is now available for use featuring bathrooms, kitchen andlaundry facilities, a dedicated covered BBQ area and accessible toilets.

Harbour manager the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) engaged Western Australian based and owned company Schlager Group Pty Ltd last June to design and construct the building on Capo D'Orlando Drive at the main access point for the harbour's boat pens.

The project also included the creation of storage spaces and an area for trolleys and bins, new fencing and CCTV improvements to boost safety and security.

The completion of the penholder facility builds on an earlier $6.1 million project to extend services at the southern land backed wharf and work to reclaim land for the penholder facility.

The project also delivered improved connections to the southern part of the harbour with a new pedestrian path, lighting upgrades and landscaping to improve public access and increase safety.

The new penholder facility and improved connections add to the State Government's investment at the harbour following the $4.6 million replacement of the nearby Jetty 3 in 2023, and a $7.8 million program to deliver major upgrades to the harbour's electrical network, which is nearing completion.

The projects form part of the State Government's Fremantle Harbours Master Plan which is guiding development across Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, Challenger and Success Harbours over the next 40-years.

The plan aims to improve connections across the popular harbour precinct to enhance access and activate public spaces along the waterfront.

It's part of the State Government's commitment to delivering quality infrastructure across the State and support the local economy and jobs.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"The delivery of new penholder facilities at Fremantle Boat Harbour is another great step forward in our government's vision to revitalise and better connect the Fremantle waterfront.

"We have invested $16.2 million in improvements at this harbour since 2023, to maximise its potential as a vibrant working boat harbour as well as a retail and hospitality hub.

"Upgrades will continue this year, with the start of works planned to replace Jetty 1 and completion of electrical network upgrades at the harbour.

"We're getting on with delivering the Fremantle Harbours Master Plan which is guiding long-term investment and infrastructure upgrades throughout Fremantle."

As stated by Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk:

"The Cook Government is proud to have delivered this $2.9 million investment in Fremantle Boat Harbour which will further activate this area for locals and visitors.

"By opening modern penholder facilities here for the first time it will encourage more boaties to utilise this harbour, which is already a popular gateway to Rottnest Island.

"It is all part of our commitment to driving development across Fremantle's three major harbours over the coming decades to improve connectivity and vibrancy for the community."
