Queenslanders are being encouraged to support good local jobs in a great local industry by eating Queensland prawns this National Prawn Day.
Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Minister Mark Furner today joined local Member for Bulimba and Minister for Employment and Small Business Di Farmer at The Fish Factory in Morningside for their National Prawn Day Prawn Peeling Competition, to see who would be crowned king of the prawns.
The competition winner walked away with 1kg of free prawns from The Fish Factory every month for the next year.
The most recent figures show Queenslanders bought more than 4 million kilograms of fresh prawns in just twelve months.
Queensland's iconic prawn species include the eastern king prawn and tiger prawn, with more than 3.5 million kilograms of them caught along the east coast combined in the 2020/21 financial year.
