Fresh Start Program Opens Door For Local Apprentice

A local apprentice is flourishing in his new role at Coolamon Shire Council, with his position supported by the NSW Government's Fresh Start Program.

William Cottom is a second-year heavy vehicle apprentice from Narrandera, who is gaining hands-on experience servicing and repairing a wide range of equipment, including front-end loaders, compaction rollers, and motor graders.

"I also assist with the servicing and maintenance of a fleet of 20+ light vehicles, including an electric vehicle, and I work closely with multiple teams to support construction projects," Mr Cottom said.

"I'm really lucky to be mentored by a senior mechanic at work with over 40 years of industry experience.

"I have developed strong practical skills, a solid work ethic, and I'm committed to completing my trade, supported by ongoing TAFE training in Wagga."

Council says that they have been seeking an apprentice of William's standard for several years and are grateful to have successfully applied to round 2 of the Fresh Start Program.

The program aims to boost the local government workforce by supporting councils across NSW to employ an additional 1,300 apprentices, trainees and cadets.

Member for Cootamundra, Steph Cooke, said the program is creating more opportunities for young people and career changers to live, learn and work in the rural communities they love.

"We know that people are more likely to stay and work in the communities where they've trained, and that's a huge advantage for our towns across the Cootamundra Electorate, where travelling or relocating is often the only available avenue to upskill," Ms Cooke said.

"Our communities are eager to retain our talented locals, so giving residents a chance to gain practical experience, earn money and remain close to home makes a real difference."

Council says apprentices and trainees will be an important part of their future workforce and would welcome additional trainees where the organisation's needs allow.
