From metropolis of three cities to city region of six cities

Greater Sydney Commission

The Greater Sydney Commission today welcomes the exciting evolution in its purpose as it prepares to become the Greater Cities Commission, with a remit including Newcastle, the Central Coast and Wollongong in addition to Greater Sydney.

Chief Commissioner Geoff Roberts AM said the expanded role of the Commission is a great progression of the original vision of the metropolis of three cities to a city region of six cities: a series of interconnected dynamic and resilient places, each with their clear and unique identity.

"We welcome this great announcement from the NSW Premier. We look forward to continuing our collaboration across government, industry and community to bring it to life" Mr Roberts said.

"The east-west axis of the metropolis of three cities – the Eastern Harbour City, the Central River City and the Western Parkland City – links two airports and will enable liveable communities where more people work within 30 minutes of where they live.

"The city region's north-south axis connects the seaports of Newcastle and the Illawarra, journeying through the Central Coast and through Parramatta. It too will build important foundations, generating more jobs for our citizens in future-facing industries, again close to where people choose to live.

"The Commission is looking forward to engaging closely with First Nations peoples, residents, councils, industry and local city-shaping experts to understand and realise community aspirations for this city region."

Mr Roberts said that the Commission's new remit is well-timed as it moves into the review of the Greater Sydney Region Plan.
