The Minns Labor Government's commitment to build a new public high school in Medowie is progressing with planning approval for the project now granted, and construction set to begin in September 2025.
New artist impressions have also been shared, giving the local community a sneak peek at their brand new high school, which is set to welcome its first cohort of students on Day 1, Term 1 2027.
The school will provide essential education infrastructure for the growing community, giving local families access to quality education close to home.
Located at 6 Abundance Road, Medowie, the high school will feature:
- Modern classrooms, including spaces for specialist support classes
- Purpose-built workshops and laboratories
- Multipurpose hall, library and administrative facilities
- Outdoor play and sports areas.
Progress on delivering this project comes in contrast to the neglect of the community by the former Liberal National government, who claimed there was no need for a school despite significant enrolment growth.
The new public high school in Medowie is among major school projects being delivered in the Hunter region to accommodate a growing population, including an upgrade at Hunter River High School and the recently completed upgrade at Irrawang High School.
Redevelopments at Newcastle High School and Gillieston Public School are also underway, as well as planning and design for a new public school and high school at Huntlee.
The Minns Labor Government is continuing the work of rebuilding public education in NSW, delivering $2.1 billion over four years for new and upgraded schools in regional NSW.
Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos said:
"The Minns Labor Government is delivering on its commitment to provide world-class education facilities in fast-growing communities, and this is crystal clear in the Hunter region.
"Our government, with the advocacy of Deputy Premier Prue Car and Kate Washington, is backing the families of Medowie by delivering them the high school they've fought so long for, even when the Liberals and Nationals said that a local public high school was not needed.
"With Medowie's population expected to grow significantly, this project is a critical step in ensuring every child has access to a quality public education close to home."
Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said:
"This is a huge moment for Medowie. We've fought for a public high school for decades, and now it's finally happening.
"For years, Medowie's families have been forced to send their kids to school out of town - but that's about to change.
"This school will transform our town and children's lives. It's about keeping our kids connected to their community and giving them the opportunities they deserve, right here at home."
"The Minns Labor Government is making our community's dreams a reality."
