Swan Hill Rural City Council will receive over $28,000 from the Transport Accident Commission's (TAC) Local Government Grant Program to implement a proactive road safety initiative aimed at reducing traffic incidents and promoting safer driving behaviours throughout the municipality.
The project focuses on improving road safety by addressing key risk factors such as drunk driving, speeding, failure to wear seatbelts, driving under the influence of drugs, and distracted driving.
Council's Director Infrastructure, Leah Johnston said through the strategic deployment of Variable Message Signs (VMS), the project will deliver concise, highly visible road safety messages aligned with TAC's road safety messaging and Safe System principles.
"Messages will serve as timely reminders to drivers, reinforcing that road safety is a shared responsibility and highlighting that even familiar roads can pose risks.
"This initiative demonstrates our commitment to creating safer roads and protecting vulnerable road users. By proactively addressing driver behaviours and reducing errors, we aim to make a real difference in the community," Ms Johnston said.
Ms Johnston said Council would evaluate the project's success using police records, crash statistics, and public feedback, aiming for measurable reductions in incidents and driver complaints.
"This initiative reinforces the Council's dedication to fostering a safer environment for all road users, contributing to the long-term goal of reducing road trauma across our municipality," she added.
