Funding Boost To Keep Port Phillip Moving Sustainably

City of Port Phillip
City of Port Phillip welcomes the Victorian Government's commitment to reinvest revenue from the congestion levy into communities most impacted, through ongoing funding for active and sustainable transport initiatives.

Under this new arrangement, Port Phillip will receive $1.5 million per year to support projects that make walking, cycling and public transport safer, easier and more accessible. This funding was negotiated by the Victorian Greens party and supported by the Victorian Government as a part of a broader $15 million annual investment secured through recent legislative changes to the State Taxation Further Amendment Bill 2025.

The amendments to the bill align with Council's Move, Connect, Live: Integrated Transport Strategy 2018-2028, which prioritises active and public transport as key to creating a more liveable and sustainable city.

Council is committed to improving transport choices for our community, and this funding will help us deliver localised projects that encourage healthier, greener ways to move around Port Phillip. Whilst the details of the funding arrangement are yet to be finalised, Council anticipates this funding could go towards projects like the Inkerman Street Safe Travel Corridor and other similar projects that enhance safety for people riding and walking within Port Phillip.

Ongoing funding arrangements are significant for Councils operating in the current financial climate. It is particularly pleasing to see that revenue generated through the congestion levy will be reinvested into the communities most affected, ensuring tangible benefits for residents and businesses.

Council will seek to work closely with the Victorian Government to finalise the process for accessing this funding and looks forward to delivering initiatives that make active and sustainable transport the preferred choice for our community.
