Funding for reconciliation events

Jacquie Petrusma,Minister for Aboriginal Affairs

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to improving the social, cultural and economic outcomes for Tasmanian Aboriginal people, which is why we are providing funding of $15,000 to Reconciliation Tasmania to support reconciliation events across the state.

National Reconciliation Week starts today (May 27) and this funding for reconciliation events will help promote greater understanding and acceptance of Aboriginal culture.

Reconciliation Tasmania will use this $15,000 funding to provide grants to Aboriginal organisations to host three regional festivals, two of which will be new events.

One grant of $5000 is to continue to support Mannalargenna Day which is celebrated at the Tebrakunna Visitors Centre at Cape Portland in the north east of Tasmania on December 7.

Mannalargenna Day commemorates the life of Mannalargenna, who was a warrior and Chief of the Pairrebeenne clan, Tebrakunna Country.

Reconciliation Tasmania will use two other grants of $5,000 to help local Aboriginal communities to establish new reconciliation festivals in the North-West and South.

These grants will be a catalyst to generate matching funding from both private and public sector sources in each of the three regions with the objective of the three festivals becoming self-supporting.
