The Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery is inviting the community to dress up and enjoy an unforgettable evening of fine dining, entertainment, and outstanding art at this year's Gala Dinner and Art Auction on Saturday 4 October from 6.30pm.
The event will showcase artworks generously donated by both local artists and creators from across Victoria and New South Wales. Among the highlights are works by Graeme Drendel, whose highly realistic and meditative paintings are represented in the National Gallery of Australia and who won the prestigious 2022 Doug Moran Portrait Prize. Guests can also bid on punchy, socially aware assemblages by Glenn Morgan, a celebrated artist held in all major state galleries, and pieces by rising star Matthew Clarke, a finalist in the Archibald, Sulman and Wynne Prizes.
Local talent will also shine, with contributions from First Nations artist Kenita-Lee McCartney, Swan Hill–based weaver and educator Suzanne Connelly-Klidomitis, and ceramicist Liz Maddy, whose dramatic pit-fired vessels are already represented in the Gallery's permanent collection.
Gallery Director Ian Tully said the auction is much more than a fundraiser.
"This evening is a chance to celebrate creativity and the generosity of artists who support the Gallery and the wider community. By bidding, you're not just purchasing original art – you're contributing to the legacy of the Gallery's collection, ensuring it continues to grow and inspire for generations."
He added that the event also highlights the importance of art in building vibrant communities.
"Art brings people together, sparks conversation, and enriches our sense of place. Nights like this remind us how vital culture is to community life"
Mayor Cr Stuart King said the timing of the event is especially exciting as the new Gallery project takes shape.
"With construction of our new gallery underway, there's a real sense of momentum and anticipation in the community. This auction supports the expansion of the collection that will be showcased in a world-class facility, ensuring we're ready to open the doors with an even stronger cultural offering for the whole region."
Guests will be welcomed with canapés and complimentary drinks on arrival, before enjoying a two-course meal. The evening will be hosted by comedienne and MC Alyce Fisher, with a local auctioneer bringing energy to the bidding as artworks go under the hammer.
Tickets are $120 per person and are available via swanhilltownhall.com or at the Swan Hill Town Hall. Cocktail attire is encouraged, with drinks available at bar prices.
