This November, Port Macquarie Hastings Council (PMHC) is hosting two community-powered events focused on sustainability, waste reduction and giving everyday items a second life.
On 7-8 and 14-15 November, Australia's biggest second-hand treasure hunt will be holding its final double weekend event. After 16 years, Garage Sale Trail is taking its final victory lap in 2026 and PMHC is calling on residents to make it the biggest one yet.
In the last two years, PMHC has been a consistent top performer in both the state and national leaderboards. In 2024, Port Macquarie Hastings had the highest number of sellers in Australia and purchased the second most number of items, saving 22,700 items from the landfill.
Last year, PMHC ranked second in NSW and fourth nationally for the highest number of sales and stalls.
Residents can participate by hosting a sale or shopping the trail. Interested sellers can register for free and get tips as well as promotional materials to help make the sale a success. For shoppers, an interactive map is available on the PMHC microsite so bargain hunters can plan their shopping route and discover hidden gems across the region.
On 8 November, PMHC is also hosting The Repair Fair at the Port Macquarie Library which will bring together local repairers and creatives who are passionate about repairing, reusing and reimagining everyday items. The community event will feature workshops, a car boot sale, markets and other family-friendly activities that aim to inspire practical action and sustainable habits.
PMHC Waste & Resource Recovery Project Officer Corrine de Mestre said that these events highlight how small changes can have a meaningful impact on the community and environment.
"Both Garage Sale Trail and The Repair Fair are fantastic ways for residents to clear our clutter, make or save extra cash and celebrate community spirit.
"According to the Australian Circular Economy Hub, 45% of carbon emissions come from how we make, consume and dispose of everyday items. Buying secondhand, selling things you no longer need or trying to repair instead of immediately replacing items are simple actions that can make a real difference," Ms de Mestre said.
