Gates Open For Fina's Mulch

Top End green thumbs and gardeners can now collect their free mulch from Cyclone Fina thanks to the Finocchiaro CLP Government.

From today to 8 February 2026, Top End residents are welcome to collect free post-cyclone mulch for personal use at the Hidden Valley green waste site.

The large piles of mulch come from 60,000 tonnes of green waste that was temporarily collected and stored at the site following Cyclone Fina, now processed and ready to put to good use.

Gates will open at 8am and close 5pm for the period. The site will be closed on Australia Day.

Residents of any local government area can bring any light vehicles such as cars, utes, trailers or small rigid trucks which are roadworthy and maintained, to collect mulch for private use only.

A tarp is recommended to cover the load.

Residents are asked to bring appropriate footwear, a shovel, and be aware of their surroundings with many other vehicles on site.

A contractor will have appropriate loaders on site to assist with loading.

Loading operations will cease during storms or adverse weather. Site conditions will be monitored during extended wet periods, and works will pause if the site becomes too boggy.

Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure, Bill Yan, said it was great that Territorians can boost their gardens for free.

"There's plenty of mulch ready for a new home and this is a great way residents can help their gardens flourish after Cyclone Fina and save plenty of money not buying it," he said.

"This is another way the Finocchiaro CLP Government is helping with cost of living pressures."

He urged residents to be patient and prepared when collecting their free mulch and comply with traffic management.

"Be mindful that weather conditions and demand might affect opening hours and our ability to help load the mulch and we thank you for your patience and understanding," he said.
