George Town Fatal House Fire, TAS

Sadly police can confirm a 30-year-old man was located deceased following an accidental house fire in George Town around 10am this morning, Tasmania Police say.

A fire scene examination conducted by the Tasmania Fire Service determined the cause of the fire to be a candle left burning which resulted in a piece of furniture smoldering and filling the room with smoke.

Damage to the residence was minimal and estimated at around $2,000.

TFS Regional Fire Investigator Anthony Goss said: "tragic incidents like today’s fatal fire highlight the importance of having working smoke alarms installed in every sleeping area. Only working smoke alarms save lives as you can’t smell smoke when you’re asleep."
