Getting Fertiliser To Farmers Faster

The Hon Julie Collins MP
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

The Albanese Labor Government is helping to get fertiliser to Australian farmers faster with the introduction of streamlined border processes for imported fertiliser that does not compromise on biosecurity.

These changes, which have been established in consultation with Fertilizer Australia, will reduce costs, reduce port clearance times, lower administrative burdens and ensure the safety of fertiliser prior to shipping.

The Government recognises the conflict in the Middle East is placing pressure on fertiliser supply globally, which is why we are taking action to support Australia's farmers, fishers and producers.

The biosecurity changes announced today include:

  • certification from an authorised inspector offshore that the goods are free of biosecurity risk material for all imports and
  • a requirement for importers using higher risk pathways to provide a bagged sample for prior inspection by a biosecurity officer
  • simplified offshore entity registration and streamlined onshore compliance inspections.

The changes uphold the existing key requirement for imported inorganic fertiliser to be free from contaminants, and do not compromise Australia's strict biosecurity protocols.

Today's announcement builds on the Government's work to help get fertiliser to Australian farmers, including:

  • the establishment of a Fertiliser Supply Working Group
  • Government and industry jointly engaging with alternative suppliers of fertiliser and
  • amending legislation to underwrite the purchase of fuel and fertiliser by the private sector.
