The Finocchiaro CLP Government is proud to announce the return of the Top End's largest celebration of Greek culture, the iconic Darwin GleNTi Festival.
Minister for Major Events Marie-Clare Boothby joined members of the Greek community today at the Greek Community Hall to help wrap dolmades ahead of the event this weekend.
Many volunteers have been preparing the huge festival feast, which includes more than 3.5 tonnes of souvla, 600 kilograms of dolmades, 2 tonnes of octopus, 800 kilograms of calamari and around 12,000 souvlaki.
A fan-favourite on the dry season calendar each year, thousands of people will descend on Bicentennial Park, the Esplanade, this weekend for the Greek festivities.
Ms Boothby said major events like GleNTi are a great celebration of the NT's multiculturalism, showcasing the contributions of communities from around the world to the Territory's lifestyle.
"Events like GleNTi drive visitation and fill venues, providing a boost to our tourism and hospitality industries, which are central to our government's plan to rebuild the economy and restore our unique lifestyle," said Ms Boothby.
"The incredible dedication of the Greek Community to this event ensures GleNTi remains a highlight for both locals and visitors year after year."
Festivalgoers can expect plenty of traditional Greek food, dancing, cultural performances, a Hellenic history showcase and music, including a special performance by the 'GleNTi All-Star Band,' flying in exclusively for the occasion.
Those looking for some competition can partake in a plate-breaking challenge, pita-eating competition and drawing contests, and kids can enjoy amusement rides, entertainment and Darwin's first-ever live performance of 'The Smurfs.'
Reinforcing its commitment to major events in the Northern Territory, the CLP government has dedicated $36.5 million to major events in its first Budget.
"Backing major events like GleNTi reinforces our commitment to a year of action, certainty and security for all Territorians," said Ms Boothby.
Greek Orthodox Community of NA Inc. President Michael Koulianos said: "GleNTi is more than just a festival, it's a celebration of community, heritage, and the incredible multicultural spirit of the Northern Territory.
"We are proud to bring people of all backgrounds together for a joyful day of Greek food, dance and music, right on the Esplanade.
"With the support of the NT Government and local businesses, this year's GleNTi promises to be the most exciting yet."
GleNTi runs from 11am until 10pm on Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, and is free to attend.
