Gold Coast community heroes have been recognised at a council meeting today as part of the 2025 Disaster Recovery Hero Awards.
Mayor Tom Tate presented the award to Robina community advocate Wayne Holmes and the Paradise Point Bowls Club.
"The City of Gold Coast Disaster Recovery Hero Award recognises the incredible efforts of individuals and community members who stepped up to help others recover during and after Tropical Cyclone Alfred and the Christmas 2023 and New Year 2024 storms," Mayor Tate said.
"Over 50 nominations were received from across the city including many heroic stories and simple acts of kindness, which is what this award is all about.
"I congratulate Wayne Holmes as our winner of the individual award and the Paradise Point Bowls Club as the local community organisation winner.
"Community helping community is such a vital part of the city's ability to recover effectively and all nominees should be proud of their achievements, and for their unwavering spirit when providing support through these difficult times."
There were nominees who volunteered through local Rural Fire Brigades and the State Emergency Service as well as individuals who coordinated food hampers and hot meals and checked on their neighbours.
There were also those who came together to help make the streets safer by cleaning up debris, organising tip runs, distributing fresh water and supporting applications for recovery grants.
The two winners were selected for reflecting the powerful impact of both individual action and collective support in times of emergencies and disasters.
The City works with various community groups to ensure they are supported in their efforts to assist those in need.
