Goulburn River Bridge To Remain Unchanged

Mitchell Shire Council confirmed the future management approach for Seymour's Old Goulburn River Bridge at a meeting on Monday 21 July.

Councillors voted to maintain the structure in its current condition and meet conservation requirements, with no further restoration works planned.

To support this approach, Council will allocate $150,000 for urgent waterproofing to slow the deterioration of exposed timber elements and commit to an ongoing program of surveillance and maintenance to ensure the structure does not deteriorate further.

This decision comes after Council's resolution in February to cancel the restoration project that was approved by the previous Council, which would have cost $5.4 million over two years.

With no external funding secured, Council determined the financial burden could not be justified and voted to terminate the contract.

Following that decision, Council was required to consider how best to manage the structure. With the bridge still subject to a Heritage Permit and the waterproofing works remaining outstanding, Council was required to determine a new long-term management approach.

The new approach ensures Council continues to preserve the structure while adopting a more financially sustainable path.
