Government finally delivers free Spirit travel

Tasmanian Labor
  • Labor and Industry calls finally answered
  • Much needed boost to tourism industry
  • Government inaction wasted valuable time
  • Tasmanian Labor welcomes the announcement of free passenger vehicle passage on the Spirit of Tasmania from March until the end of June.

Labor leader Rebecca White said the Liberals had finally answered the calls coming from Labor and industry for some time.

"The tourism industry has been asking the Government since May last year for an extension of the passenger vehicle equalisation scheme and we have backed those calls," Ms White said.

"In December Labor called on the Government to listen to the industry and only now have we seen action.

"Tasmania's tourism industry continues to feel the impact of COVID and when JobKeeper is cut in March tourism businesses will need further Government assistance.

"This announcement will help bring more people to Tasmania during traditionally quiet months and inject much needed cash into regional areas.

"The Government should be doing everything it can to get Tasmania back on track.

"Our tourism operators need long term security and the delay in introducing this scheme is disappointing for all Tasmanians.

"Tasmania needs a Labor Government to deliver better outcomes for the Tourism sector."

    Labor Leader
