Government must back Tasmanian State Leagues

Tasmanian Labor

The Tasmanian Liberal Government must reaffirm its support for the future of football in Tasmania by backing the Tasmanian State League and the reintroduction of the women's competition.

Shadow Minister for Sport Josh Willie said with the future of the TSL uncertain post 2023, the government must provide assurance it won't turn its back on it.

"With the Tasmanian Football Futures report set to be released imminently it's vital Tasmania's top division football clubs have the backing of the government," Mr Willie said.

"Today I am happy to reiterate Labor's strong support for the TSL and football in this state.

"TSL clubs need certainty in the future of their competition and they want to be assured that the league will not be abandoned once this report is released.

"It's also not acceptable to have an elite men's competition without the same opportunity being afforded to talented Tasmanian women and I would like to put on the record Labor's firm support for the reintroduction of the TSLW.

"Labor has always been a strong supporter of Tasmanian football and we support the state's quest for a team at the elite level.

"However, this cannot come at the cost of the grassroots clubs that have served the local game for decades.

"Premier Peter Gutwein must once again confirm his support for the TSL and say whether he supports the reintroduction of TSLW, these leagues are vital for the future of these clubs and the future of Tasmanian football."
