Government must keep Burnie Court in CBD

Tasmanian Labor

With the Public Works Committee today holding a meeting in Burnie regarding the future of the Burnie Court Complex, Labor urges the government to keep the court in the CBD.

Shadow Minister for Local Government and Planning Anita Dow said it was clear the best plan for the future of the court was to keep it in the CBD.

"It's time for the government to abandon their plan to relocate the Burnie Court outside of the CBD," Ms Dow said.

"Moving the court outside the CBD lacks the support of the business community, local residents, council and legal professionals, it makes no sense.

"All we have seen from the government on this crucial project is a cost blow out, from $15 million three years ago, to $40 million now."

Ms Dow said last week Labor launched a petition to keep the court in the CBD.

"It is more than clear that the relocation to Mooreville Road is not suitable and the government must commit to either upgrading the current CBD site or finding a new one.

"The government must listen to the community and keep the Burnie Court in the CBD."
