Government that can't build and can't deliver essentials wants to waste money on pointless Games bid

Tasmanian Labor

The Gutwein Government needs to focus on its significant failures in delivering on infrastructure and health and housing and education instead of throwing money at a pointless unbudgeted thought bubbles like bidding for a role in the Commonwealth Games.

Shadow Treasurer Shane Broad said the government had late today attempted to launch a massive distraction from recent events including Sarah Courtney resigning as Education Minister after failing to do her job while holidaying in Europe by announcing it would attempt to secure a role as a host state for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

"This is nothing more than a deeply cynical attempt at distraction which comes from a government already borrowing $2 million a day every day for the next four years," Dr Broad said.

"This is a pointless plan with absolutely no ability to deliver and any money spent on a bid would be money wasted.

"Peter Gutwein, in writing to the Commonwealth Games CEO, has not even thought through the most basic details like where would we accommodate thousands of athletes and spectators? Where could he possibly hold an opening and closing ceremony of any size?

"Tasmanians are expected to believe that the government could fund and organise massive upgrades to state sporting facilities in only four years when their record on health and housing and education is abysmal and their efforts on infrastructure are characterised by underspends and constant delays.

"This is a ridiculous suggestion from a government that cannot even build a bridge or fix potholes properly."
