The Finocchiaro CLP Government has today opened applications for the 2025-26 Northern Territory Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Youth Grants Program.
Grants of up to $20,000 are available for community projects and non-government organisations that reduce harm associated with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs through prevention, education and community action initiatives.
Minister for Health Steve Edgington said the CLP Government is backing communities to take action and protect young people.
"In our year of action, certainty and security we are investing in community-led programs that prevent harm before it occurs," Mr Edgington said.
"By providing the right tools, education and support, we can help youth people make healthier choices and reduce the risks associated with alcohol and drug use."
Now in its 10th year, the Northern Territory AOD Youth Grants Program supports projects that:
Promote healthy choices;Improve mental health, social and emotional wellbeing;Reduce harms associated with AOD; andEncourage healing, connection to culture and community to increase strength and resilience.
In 2024, 14 applications across the NT received grants to run targeted programs. Since its launch in 2016, 139 projects have been supported, with more than $2.35 million invested across the Territory.
Previous AOD Youth Grant recipient Steve G, Head Coach, Manager, The Hub of Respect Inc - Making a Difference (MAD) Youth Program, said the grant had been instrumental in engaging young people of Alice Springs in meaningful activities that address alcohol and other drug challenges.
"We had 20 participants that were Year 9 students attend our 8-week program which worked on strength and conditioning and boxing exercises along with in-depth conversations about their lives and AOD issues," Mr Steve G said.
"It's not just about funding - it's about empowering youth to lead change and create safer, healthier environments for themselves and their peers.
"We've seen firsthand how this support can spark a real impact for our community with improvement in behaviours and positive engagement with participants."
