Green Pathways Expanded for Walk, Run, Ride

Work is currently underway to expand and connect our Greenways network of walking and cycling paths with $3 million committed this financial year to:

  • create a new Greenways Plan
  • continue work on already identified new path links
  • make existing paths safer and more accessible for our community.

A new Greenways Plan is being developed to help us enhance connectivity between neighbourhoods, parks, schools and key destinations across our suburbs. This plan will guide us to make it easier and safer for our residents to move around, stay active, drive less and enjoy their local environment through our network of paths.

The Plan will also improve biodiversity along our Greenways network, with more trees and plantings to be added to improve and create new wildlife corridors and habitats.

On Tuesday 21 October 2025 Councillors and community members gathered at Ferndale Park, Glen Iris, alongside a recently upgraded path link to celebrate council's investment and commitment to an expanded and connected network. Through the Greenways Plan, this section of path will one day connect Ashburton to Kew in a single shared path.

Students from Glen Iris Primary School were on hand to help the Mayor, Councillor Sophie Torney and Gardiner Ward, Councillor Victor Franco (pictured at top) plant some new trees along side the upgraded path to kick-start more revegetation of the area.

In November, our biodiversity team will start preparation to revegetate approximately 6,000 square meters alongside this section of pathway.

Over the next 3 years, around 20,000 tube stock plants will be added to create layered vegetation which will help support native wildlife, in particular small birds which require a dense shrub layer to thrive.

The Greenways Plan is about more than just the infrastructure - it's about shaping a greener, more resilient and connected city. Council is committed to supporting sustainable transport, healthier lifestyles and stronger community connections and the Greenways Plan will help us achieve just that.
