The Greens will support a ban on deferrable surgeries on intersex children. The bill will be introduced to the Victorian Parliament on Tuesday.
It comes just months after Victorian Greens LGBTQIA+ Equality spokesperson, Aiv Puglielli, asked the Minister for Health if the legislation would come before the parliament this year.
The Greens support any improvements that will ensure that people born with intersex variations are empowered to make decisions about their own bodies.
As stated by Victorian Greens LGBTQIA+ Equality spokesperson, Aiv Puglielli:
"Everyone has the right to make decisions about their own body. Too many people born with intersex variations have been denied this right.
"The lack of these laws have caused significant and irreversible physical and mental harm to community members born with innate variations in sex characteristics. These reforms are long overdue."
As stated by Victorian Greens Health spokesperson, Sarah Mansfield:
"This bill will ensure decisions prioritise the wellbeing and autonomy of people born with innate variations in sex characteristics.
"In addition to these laws, there needs to be appropriate funding for community controlled organisations to provide support for children, families, and carers."
