Greens: Heidelberg Sinkhole Shows Labor's Negligence

Australian Greens

The Greens have called out Labor's negligence for the local community and environment impacted by the North East Link toll road project.

It comes after a second sinkhole opened up on Tuesday morning in Heidelberg close to where tunnel boring machines are operating.

According to community members the hole is about 12 metres by 12 metres at A.J Burkitt Oval in Heidelberg.

The first sink hole occurred early in 2025 at one of the North East Link work sites. At the time, Greens MP for North-East Metropolitan Aiv Puglielli asked the Minister about the status of the sink hole and any potential risks that it posed to nearby homes, workers and the community.

A response received from the Minister for Transport in March stated that an investigation has been conducted and measures have been put in place to ensure everyone is safe. The Greens say this second sinkhole is proof that the community and local environment is not safe from the destruction of the North East Link toll project.

As stated by Victorian Greens Member for North-East Metro, Aiv Puglielli:

"This is the second sinkhole these boring machines have likely caused. What's to say someone's home or precious native habitat isn't next?

"The North East Link toll road project has coated nearby homes in dust and grime, destroyed precious native habitats and now opened up a giant hole on a public oval. The community deserves answers about the environmental impacts of this disastrous toll road project.

"What more is this Labor government willing to risk in the name of more cars, more tolls and billions more in budget blowouts?"
